Overheating? Core 2 Quad e6600

I recently purchased a abit ip35pro board and a E6600 2.4ghz core 2 quad proccessor. I put everything in a large coolmaster case with many fans. I used the program that comes with the abit board and it says my cpu temp is at like 79C It seems to run fine. This sounds very hot to me. Is it possible the temp sensor is reading incorrectly? What else could be wrong. I used the fan that comes with the core 2 quad?

79c would be very hot. I expect that the board is misreading the temp. A fellow not long ago was on hear with a similar post and it turned out that when he flashed his bios the update fixed the temperature misread which was due to a bios bug. I expect you may have the same problem. I'm not sure the q6600 is even rated to run at 79c that is quite hot for a desktop cpu.

I checked the temp a little bit ago and it was reading about 59C at idle but jumps up to approx 75C-79C under load. I will check for updates on the abit bios, hopefully that takes care of it.

What is a good normal temp range and voltage range for this proccessor?

5-30 C: very good
31-45 C: good
46-55 C: warm
56-60 C: CAUTION: just below the limit, check the heat sink for dust
61- C: WARNING: Too hot! get a new cooler or change thermal paste and
clean the heat sink for dust!

I dunno if that is 100 % accurate but it is at least pretty close. (do you agree?)

I got my E4400 running @ aprox. 40 C idle.

I use coretemp which uses the CPU's sensors to monitor the temp. It is very accurate. You can get it here:

I use a Q6600 with air cooling in my PC.

Under 100% load my CPU's temperature is only 45-46°C
The VCore is set to 1.225V (default - 1.2V).

Thanks for you help. It has been awhile since I have put a computer together. I also have one more question. On my board there is a an 8pin connector that is for cpu power? I have a plug with 6 and one with four coming from my power supply. Do i need to plug a power connector here?
If so which one. I currently have the 24pin connector plugged in to the board and the 4 pin into the 8pin connector on the board. I believe the 6 pin is for my video card if it is required?

Before i put my Q6600 under water cooling i was running the same as Qwerty, Also try another temp monitoring program , there are plenty out now that will monitor the temps of each core , usually two cores will run a bit hotter than the other two on the die. Good luck.
