|
|
I'm curious what people think/know are the most versatile CPUs. By versatile, I mean used in the most applications. I have a good idea what processors were used in which computers, but I don't know where else they were used. I know the Motorola 68000 had a good run in many applications. The Z80 powered a few game systems. I know the 386 was made for years after it was commonly used in PC's.
To sum it up, I'm curious what CPU's were commonly used in non PC applications.

There's a list of CPUs used in spacecraft at http://www.cpushack.net/space-craft-cpu.html.
There are probably a lot of different lists, as a high percentage of common modern technological items have some form of computer in them. Your TV, Microwave Oven, Car (if more modern than mine ), Mobile Phone - they all are likely to have a computer chip of some kind in them....
I would say, in no particular order, that the 8086, 80386, 1802, 6800 and Z80 are among the best known and likely therefore to be among the most widely used. That is purely guesswork based on no educated research though _________________ My graphics card database can be found at http://www.gpuzoo.com.

I see the 68k-based in the most things where I know there is a processor Besides computers, all day long.
Chargers (Moto 68xxxx) and games, and calculators, and PDAs, and etc etc.... 68k I see the most. |

I'd have to say the 8051 series, used in more things then anything else.
Like the PIC, it is still in production, but buy over 100 companies. _________________ New for 2025! The CPU Shack has a co-processor!

| 386 and 486 chips also widely used in the embedded market. I'd say they are the most widely used in terms of numbers after microcontrollers. |

Mobile phone eh? I recently removed the ARM processor from my old Nokia. I was having fun one day with my new heat gun. |

Google's top hits for "most widely used microcontroller" says 8051 so quite likely the case. |
