Replaced my 4200+ Athlon X2 system with a E8200 45nm Penryn this weekend. 2.66 GHz and also 6MB core. Really nice cpu i must say and yes, who would thought running 6 Mb cache.... On the other hand, this is just the beginning. As it has always been _________________ My collection: http://www.cpucollection.se :::::: http://www.chipdb.org Photos of chips you never knew existed. Size and speed.
L1 Cache (The L is Level) is smallest and fastest, then you go to L2 Cache, which is a little slower, and usually lots bigger.
Some CPU's then have L3 Cache, which is a bit slower yet, and often much bigger.
After that, you have main memory.
The first 'mainstream' CPU that used L3 Cache was the AMD K6-3, as socket 7 CPU's had their L2 Cache on the mnotherboard (rather then on the CPU) The K6-3 had L2 cache one die, so used the cache on the motherboard as L3. They were fast (I ran one for many years) _________________ New for 2025! The CPU Shack has a co-processor!
