I got these two beautiful UltraSPARC CPU-boards.

The CPU on the second board (167 MHz one) looks like remarked.

During the cleaning process I spotted almost erased markings on the chip (see picture 3). They are - STP1030BGA-100
Both markings - new and old ones look like factory made. I wasn't able to remove them.

According to Wikipedia there was no UltraSparc I CPU with 100MHz !

What do you think about it - is it a fake or did SUN remarked its chips at the factory?

I doubt it's a fake to fool the collectors, because I purchased it as a spare part pulled from a working system and not as a collector's item.
If it's an early fake to fool the users on selling them an overclocked CPU - where did the fakers got a 100 MHz version to remark? Think

I didn't know these went as slow as 100, with that picture I would have said it was a 200

I looked with the magnifying glass at the markings. The first number is really narrow, it looks more like a "1" and than like "2", but I am not completely sure.

The markings on the picture I made look really like a "2", but it's only because of a scratch near the bottom of the first character.
I'll try to take a picture at the different angle tomorrow.

If it's really a remarked 200MHz version, why was it marked with 200 first and then downgraded?
Does somebody have a similar remarked UltraSparc in his / her collection?

P.S. @Debs: I miss your old signature Wink
