"Since only a handful of these CPUs exist in the world today"

I wonder what the actual population is. Thousands?

Still they go for $600+ strange... Do you have examples of pre 4004 stuff (ie the chips you collect) that reaches those prices?

Good question cpuswe!

I can't help but think of rare nixie tubes when I see a discussion on prices like this.

Recently a single ** USED ** CD46 tube plus socket sold for nearly $1000 USD.

Just like the CD46 tube, I do not see C4004 all over ebay. While I do not collect either of those items, simply because the price is now too high, I am still interested to see them.

Thousands??? That means there is more to go around for every collector, and then some. So why don't you have one? Smile

That's because his statement is false, and there are far less than a thousand pieces in circulation. Over the past 5 years, can anyone here vouch that they have witnessed over 1 thousand C4004 grey sales on ebay? And CPU-World? Even combined, it doesn't come close to that number Smile

I have more than one. Smile A few years ago I saw an auction for grey-trace C1101As claiming they were rare as hen's teeth, blah de blah de blah. Later on, I looked in my attic and found no less than 260 of them, all socketed. I think it's reasonable to assume the number of C4004s in the wild is at least in the hundreds - and yes, probably in the thousands, sitting in warehouses all over the world.

I've sold a few rare 1960s SN3xx flat packs - the type NASA used back in the day - for $200 apiece and above. The fact that you don't see many for sale is attributable more to ignorance than lack of collectability.

I beg to differ. "In circulation" and "in existence" are two VERY different things.

When I first got started on Ebay, even common-as-dirt Nixies like the B-5092 sold for outrageously high prices. Then everybody jumped on the bandwagon and began collecting and selling them, at which point the bottom dropped out of the market as people finally realized there were lots more to be had. In all likelihood, the same thing will eventually happen to many of these beloved Intel collectibles. What you have to remember about the semiconductor industry (post 1960s) is these chips were produced in *enormous* volumes.

He he. I know your view on most of us here that stock up on those ridiculous Intel chips... But the strange thing is that i get the feeling that we are many times more than the ones collecting the type of chips you have. How come?

Perhaps i just have not found where you hang? Is there a online community like this forum for that kind of chips? A forum to discuss different flat packs, and show of your latest buys? Could it be that those chips are TO rare that they donīt become collectable because of that? Perhaps there are more to collecting than to fill your house full of old chips? I know it is for me...

Actually, I'm glad to finally see people collecting chips of any kind. I've been doing this since about the mid-'70s, so it's nice to see that it hasn't been sheer folly all these years.

I think the popular misconception is that computing began with Intel, and the 4004 in particular. In reality, chips were used in computers for nearly a decade prior (not just mainframes, but desktop units as well), not to mention there were bit-slice CPUs and numerous dedicated processors years before the "first" microprocessor. Tons of important history is being ignored by focusing exclusively on the time period after 1971.

Sadly, none that I'm aware of. Seems to be just a handful of people scattered around the 'net pursuing this aspect of the integrated circuit hobby. (For now...)

Cpuswe wrote:

I dunno, is *anything* too rare to be collectible? Smile It's true they're a lot harder to find, and I suppose that's one of the main reasons I collect them. Another reason is my fascination with microelectronics and its rapid evolution from very humble beginnings at TI and Fairchild.

Cpuswe wrote:

I agree, which is why I have no interest in dime-a-dozen Intel parts Wink when there's a whole other world of ICs to explore.

You bet. The pics I post are pre-archived stuff I already have sitting on my HD. The whole collection - ICs, displays, calculators, computer boards, vacuum tubes, etc. - is at least a hundred times larger. As soon as I have time, I'll try to post a few more.
