Floppy drive... Most laptops these days don't have one, so let's nix that. That's irrelevant. Hard drive... You mean like the MacBook Air? Seems to me, any kind of nonvolatile storage would do - bubble memory, RAM w/ battery back-up, etc. Runs "common" software... CP/M was still a viable OS in '84, with tons of programs available. Oops, the DG1 was an x86 (well, 80C88) machine.
You might be able to get away with saying the DG1 is the first "tradtional" PC-compatible-ish laptop, but first laptop EVER? Nah. A laptop is any general-purpose computer that fits in your lap, sports a full-size keyboard and LCD or other flat-panel display, runs on batteries, and has one or more ports of some kind. Oh, and doesn't set your pants on fire. Anything else is picking nits.

Well, we can agree on one thing - it's definately debatable. _________________ Looking for Vintage computer chips? Goto: http://rjkiley2.googlepages.com/home |

Ah, the poor swimmers.
Most laptops sold today are sold as portable computers, or desktop replacements (Like those 17" monstrocities).
Real "Laptops" today are sold as "Notebook Computers" or "Ultraportables" or the ilk: They are normally classified as being low-heat, and lightweights (<3LBs), and almost always have screen dimensions of less than 14". |
