In response to what you said, I do agree with the rarity of chips, but isn't that the case for anything collectible? People like to believe that there's a hidden stack of 4004's somewhere in the world, not yet discovered; perhaps in an old factory somewhere? An old engineers attic, or even in stock on a world class component site? All have skimmed through their stuff, thanks to eBay and online forums revealing the value of almost anything in the world. Anything that hasn't been revealed yet is probably so deep in storage, no one will find it unless it's by accident. Sure, you can wait 5-10 years for a large quantity to come up- but is anyone REALLY that dumb to reveal such a finding? Most likely those C4004's first end up in the hands of a collector, and with all odds on hand, will probably not reveal it's existence. So to keep the chips integrity as well as his investment, those chips would be destroyed or sold in such a manner that they would not damper it's value. An investors job is to prevent that chip from being so saturated it's value becomes comparable to table salt; a collector's job is somewhat similar, because he has to find as many chips as possible that contain some kind of value due to their scarcity. A chest full of C4004's would combine these two people, so theoretically, the chest would never exist
and you've misquoted me a number of times, half the quotes weren't said by me Also I'd love to see your C4004 grey's! If you have pictures, could you perhaps put them up? I'm trying to document as many of them as I can, to see how many exist in the hands of collectors.

You bet. The pics I post are pre-archived stuff I already have sitting on my HD. The whole collection - ICs, displays, calculators, computer boards, vacuum tubes, etc. - is at least a hundred times larger. As soon as I have time, I'll try to post a few more.

Cool. I am interested to see early British made nixies. Also I have a stack of mercury arc rectifiers. Would be cool to see what you have. |

Absolutely. Happens all the time on Ebay with other collectible items... 9 out of 10 times, the person who finds them has no idea what they've got. Outside of the chip collecting community and maybe a few comp sci classrooms, whoever heard of an "Intel 4004"? Would most people even know that the "i" on the lid stands for Intel? Probably not.

I think you're drastically overestimating the number of Intel collectors out there.

Trust me, tube after tube of them are sitting on a shelf somewhere collecting dust, either because nobody knows what they are, or they're buried among thousands of other random ICs. But the fact that 50 people trade a limited number back and forth on Ebay doesn't by itself make them rare. Ebay isn't even the best place to find chips to begin with. 99.999% of my collection came from hamfests, estate sales, surplus dealers, and the like. The most I've ever paid for a single chip is $10, with anywhere from 10 cents to a dollar being more typical.

Will do, once I dig them out of the rubble. At least 3 of them are on boards, as I recall.
