This board has a AMD Duron 266 CPU; any chance of getting something more modern? How about sound card etc?

first not Duron 266 but Duron Applebred on FrontSideBus 266 MHz. Were from 1.4 to 1.8 GHz models. You can surely mount Athlon XP Thoroughbred on FSB 266 MHz i.e. 2600+ but to tell you more I need information about your motherboard. Sound card ? You can go for latest PCI model.
