so just recently my computer has been shutting down due to overheating, when it ranfine with no problems. i've put on some new thermal compound after wiping away the old compund, and i've tried using a different power supply in case the voltage was off. both didn't solve anything. was just wondering if there's any other possible causes for this. any help would be appreciated, thanks

A bad motherboard or a bad chip can produce these effects. Check your cpu's die for chips in the silicon (the core) and check your motherboard for bad capacitors.

Visual indications: bad capacitors can swell up and/or leak. Is your CPU fan running fast enough?? Did you check for and clean out any dust build-up within the heatsink fins?? If you have them (and you should), are the case intake and exhaust fans running properly?? Has the CPU voltage been increased?? Have you added a new video card that's generating a lot of heat?? Has the room temperature where your computer "lives" risen to a large degree?? Are the case vents blocked in any way??

Whew...............!!

you may also try testing your memory, if all seems well w/ your cpu. use memtest1.70. had similar problems too before. HTH!
