These tubes were my grandfather's. I think they make an attractive display. When in operation, they supposedly glow red.

The 100TH is a high power triode, used as a high power amplifier or oscillator. 100W plate dissipation.
Nice tube.

The 450TL is the same thing, but up to 450Watts. Really nice tubes.
Length 12.5 inches by 5 inches diameter.

According to the 450TL datasheet, cooling of the 450TL is accomplished by radiation from the plate, which operates at a visible red color at maximum dissipation...

Jac, these tubes can be appreciated even more when displayed operating in a military Shortwave- Mediumwave BC-610 or homemade transmitter and when above a clear set of .gif or similarly filed circuit diagrams. 450-TL modulated by pair, 100-THs, or 450-TH sending Morse code, 100-THs standing by.

Question... Why do they call them valves?

Valve is the English generic name.. and if you think what a valve does, it controls the flow of something.. thats essentially all valves (tubes) are.. the control of electrons in many strange ways. I am not 100% sure if that is the reason why they are called valves, but it makes sense.

Other cool names are condensers for capacitors .. erm.. cant think of any more right now.. but there are a few more. Maybe some of the geriatric members can shed more light, its all a bit before my time.

A really neat thing happened to me because of a wax condenser.
At a yard sale I found an Atwater Kent model 555 radio underneath
a bed and was allowed to buy it for $10. Its cabinet, by the way,
looks just like the cabinet of an Edison vintage 1920 cylinder phono
graph. When I opened it I found that a leaking wax condenser in the
dead center bottom of the chassis bypassing the cathode of the first
intermediate frequency amplifier stage had leaked and the wax
spread over the entire metal chassis top and bottom, preserving it.
I had a mint condition nickel plated chassis shining like anything
Atwater Kent 555. A museum piece especially because it`s really
small. I have to run it on 95 volts ac not more otherwise it`d burn
up. Sadly, years before, I saw the shiny unmistakable small mud-
red power transformer from an other Atwater Kent 555 on som
eone`s repair shelf as the Radio had not survived into modern times.

Typograph: that`s Edison vintage 1920, portable, cylinder phonograph.
