I have a Dell 4100 that chose to die on me last week. I checked out the disc drive on another machine and it appeared ok from a directory standpoint [I could see all the files]. The machine simply doesn't boot off a HDD. I replaced the motherboard and still have the same problem... I think it's the Pentium 3 CPU.

Can anyone tell me where I can get a replacement unit or is there a socket compatible better Intel CPU...??

Thanks guys.

Sometimes, a drive can become unbootable but have the data be viewable.

What OS are you running?

Odds are it is that, and NOT the CPU.

My main drive at the moment has been doing that for a few months. For now, I just keep the XP CD in the drive when I boot, and let that boot from the HD. That works fine for me, and means the necessary upgrade can wait a few more months Smile I was never able to find out what has broken on the drive to prevent the BIOS directly booting from it, and plan to wait until I don't need the drive before I start experimenting more than I already did to find out what the problem is.
