|
|
I was checking for a part for my car on Ebay and a found lots of ads for a "super chip" that claims to increase gas mileage AND boost engine performance!
Is this a rip-off or not? The cost is only $8 plus shipping.
Here is the text of one ad on Ebay:
"PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
In the early ‘90s the entire automotive industry moved in a new direction - moving away from carburetion as a method fuel delivery to start manufacturing fuel injected vehicles. With the advent of fuel injection came new challenges. How could we create new products for this new technology that would benefit both the average consumer - by increasing fuel economy; and the car enthusiast – by increasing performance. We set out to design a performance chip that would improve performance and fuel efficiency simultaneously, and do all of this at an affordable price point.
The only way we could do this was to modify the most easily modified part of any vehicle – the engine computer or ECU. By altering certain inputs and outputs we could adjust the vehicle’s air/fuel ratio to maximize performance and fuel economy simultaneously. At first our testing demonstrated either a lean or rich mixture depending on whether we adjusted the inputs for performance or fuel economy. Adjusting for improved fuel economy would cause a lean mixture while adjusting for performance would cause a rich mixture. But after extensive testing and research we have found a perfect balance in which both performance and fuel economy is maximized at stoichiometric levels. This means the engine is neither wasting fuel, nor is the engine starving for fuel at all times. The ECU dynamically adjusts based on unique inputs. Based on these inputs, the ECU can now adjust to the user’s driving style to maximize both performance and fuel economy simultaneously.
We are so confident that you will be completely satisfied with the results that we are offering a 100% money back guarantee. If you do not see an immediate change in fuel economy and performance you may return the module for a full refund.
Please note that the current eBay price is an introductory price set so that we can introduce our product to the eBay marketplace at a competitive price point." |

Yes and no.
Yes its typically BS and usually will void your warranty (there are some that DO work).
But NO a company would not get 20HP and 5mpg more if they could.
as thats only 2/3rds of the problem.
The key of the engine triangle is emissions.
output power and milage AT A CERTAIN emissions level.
Getting 1 of the 3 is easy, getting 2 of the 3 is difficult. getting all 3 well that is VERY hard. _________________ New for 2025! The CPU Shack has a co-processor!

Quite a lot of businesses based on transport go for the ECU reprogramming in Poland. I'm not quite sure if it's legal or anything (forget your guarantee for sure) but these vehicles pass the technical test in order to be road legal so I guess there's nothing wrong with the emission levels. A lot of companies reprogram diesel van cpu's as it's easiest to get much better results - buy a 90 BHP version of Peugeot Partner, have it reprogrammed to around 120BHP and you end up with more power and less fuel consuption, the only bad thing is that oil has to be changed more often due to turbo's higher pressure. Running on diffrent fuel than regular diesel is another thing, some use vegetable oil or oil used for heating houses. The bad thing is that the police in Poland have the means to check what you are running on and companies pay huge fines when caught. _________________ Power without the price. |

I am not really into that matter...
but for 8$ you will most likely recieve just a resistor in a fancy box...
This thing will trick your ECU - letting it respond in a different way.... |
