Got around to playing with a motherboard and processor...
Pentium 4 Mobile 538 3.2GHz, 533MHz FSB 1MB L2 with HT
Gigabyte GA-8IG1000 Pro-g Rev 4.0 Motherboard
My motherboard reports a maximum multi of 14, when it's really 24.
I set my FSB to 210MHz (840MHz Quad) and the system boots at 5.02GHz, but the BIOS says it's 359MHz by 14. Strange!
Windows says it sees a 5.02GHz processor.
Orthos (for 5 hours now) says the correct 5040MHz processor.
Memtest86+ says a P4 at 5040MHz.
CPUID says it's 210x14, running at 2940MHz. 
Who do I believe? |

HHHHHHHHHHHMMMMMMMMMMM............... What kind of cooling are you using on this alleged 5.02GHz overclock?? If the CPU is in fact running this fast, the voltage requirement, etc., will generate a tremendous amount of heat. Getting over 5GHz from a modern - hitech CPU (much less a P4) with a factory unlocked multiplier is a formidible task, even for the experts. With all due respect, I seriously doubt the claim, regardless of what software may have indicated such speed.
I have no idea of your level of experience or expertice in the overclocking area, but mine says over 5GHz from a P4 (mobile or not) takes more than 'playing around'. IMO, you are correct in saying the Super PI report indicates something MUCH LESS than 5GHz.
Just voicing my opinion. I thought I was wrong one time, but found out I was mistaken.

I don't doubt the board supports a 24x multiplier, I SERIOUSLY doubt a P4 will run anywhere near 5.02GHz; on air or water cooling. If yours will, get a legitimate Benchmark and call Guiness Book of World Records and Intel................. Quickly!!

Hi,
at the moment the ThuG OC Team Italy has the World Record of the overclock, they was able to run (and validate) a Pentium 4 631 at 8180Mhz, using LN2 cooling sistem, so 5Ghz with water cooling isn't so hard to reach. |

Ok, the World Record Team uses things like dry ice/liquid nitrogen/moon dust/etc. to acheive super high clock speeds. So a specific P4 model with 800MHz FSB and 'C' stepping will run incredibly fast, I'll concede that because I've just read the facts.
Not that anyone cares, but I still have a major question in my mind about the average 533MHz (FSB) P4 running stable, day in/day out @ 5.02MHz on air or water. What good is an overclock if you can't depend on the speed all the time?? Do you follow me?? I'd love to be proven wrong, and learn of a run-of-the-mill P4 operating daily @ over 5GHz as a rule and not the exception. I might not shut-up, but I'd know I was wrong.
One of my 'puters has an e2160 (1.8GHz), I have had it @ 3.4+GHz (with stock cooling) long enough to get a screenshot of the numbers reported by CPU-Z and Crystal CPUID, but it ran super hot and was unstable to say the least. That's ~90% overclock, but I don't claim it because that clock speed is useless except for bragging rights. It will run @ 3.0GHz, with stock cooling, all day everyday; and has done so for about 10 months (give or take).

5GHz was attainable with water cooling with a Prescott, it's was on Tom's Hardware.
My massive air cooler should do the trick I'm hoping for at least 4 GHz... If I can get some multi support from my mobo! |

| While reading about the 8+GHz overclock, I think I remember they were using 14x (or there about) and a much higher CPU clock than you tried. In light of your problem with the multiplier, have you considered that?? |

Hi,
have you tried to upgrade you mobo bios?
I think that this mobo hadn't direct support for mobile cpu, so it's bios will not show correct information. |
