I am running an AMD Athlon XP 2000+ on a GIGABYTE GA-7VAXP motherboard and I would like to buy a faster chip to run with.
What is the fastest XP that I can use for this board @266MHz ?

Will I see much performance gain with the faster CPU?

I need to buy or trade for a CPU that runs at least at 2500.
Thanks.

John

This is Gigabyte's list of CPU's for your board. Please note that a few are not supported for motherboard revision 1.x. You failed to mention what rev.# you have, but I mentioned the fact anyway.

http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Support/Motherboard/CPUSupport_List.aspx?ProductID=1391

Pay attention to CPU's with the higher (larger numerically) L2 cache sizes. My limited experience with AMD's Sempron line shows them to be lacking in this area.

BTW, the Gigabyte list includes some processors with 333MHz FSB speeds, too.

Ok-thanks Cobra!

I see that I can run all the following CPUs on my trusty M-board:

AMD AthlonXP (Barton,.13u) OR K7S Sempron
Speeds: 2500, 2600, 2800, or 3000 -- @333MHz

Anyone have one of the above that you could sell me (or trade)?

Thanks.

Hi johnorun,
I recentely changed my Athlon XP 2800+ with a Athlon MP 3000+ @3400

So I have the 2800 to sell but I am trying to solve some instability problems before.... here:

w w w.cpu-world.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=9588&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=15

After fixed problems I could sell the CPU, I would do a ebay bidding for our security. It is a 166 MHz x 2 FSB (Barton I think, boh, we will see if you are interested!)

I have also a XP 3000+ barton but it did not work on my motherboard, I think it is broken or incompatible with my motherboard; I don't know and I don't want to test it again because I should put the 3000 MP off the motherboard and Athlon XP cores are so easy to break!

Hi-
Just so you know, I'm not looking to pay a lot for this chip.
We try not to charge high prices to each other as members and we all benefit from buying ,selling and trading each others' surplus items at reasonable prices.
As for using Ebay, that's ok, but it's a lot easier to do it with private messages here in CPU World. You need to join this group (it's free and highly recommended) to be able to use private messaging and other cool features here.
There is a high level of trust in this group, which you will discover as a member!
I'll wait to hear from you after you solve your "instability problems" with your new chip.

Thanks,
-John

Hi John,
I am testing again CPU, anyway I think I "solved" problems...

I buyed my new athlon MP CPU here like you can see from my username:

h t t p://cgi.ebay.it/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=290234912309&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT&ih=019

(ebay object 290234912309)

I spent some money so I thought to sell my old XP 2800+ to take some money from it and make my CPU upgrade cheaper..
I thought also I could use 2800 in an experimental project of computer clustering for physics but I don't have an other MB, I don't know, hard work and only a strange idea...
Anyway that seller has a great choice of CPU and you could even take a CPU from him, the CPU they sold me was perfect!

PS: I don't know where you are from, I am from Italy (Pisa) and if you are overseas I think anyway the shipping and taxes are too high for us. If you was from Europe it could be better..

I see this post only now...

Speeds: 2500, 2600, 2800, or 3000 -- @333MHz[u]

Depending about the multiplier you can set on your motherboard you could run a CPU like the MP that I buyed on ebay at 333 FSB (166 x2) until 2440 MHz.

I try to explain: I setted it at 195 x 12.5 = 2.4 GHz (400 MHz FSB) but if you have the limit of 333 (166 x2) FSB you could anyway run it at 166 x 14.5 = 2.4 GHz.

It originally works at 133 x 16.5 = 2.2 Ghz (266 FSB) and it is a standard 3000+ so you could have a CPU like a 3200 or similar running it a 333 FSB and 2.4 Ghz.

I think it could be the better CPU upgrade if you have the multiplier available!

NB: I noticed that, on my Asus A7N8X motherboard at least, multipliers available for 2800+ was different from the ones available for the 3000 MP! The same for the Vcores! Make attention!

Thanks, James, for the Ebay idea. I will look there for a CPU chip!

There are several members of this group from Italy, also.

Yes, I am overseas in Chicago, US.
