|
|
Hi all,
I recently upgraded my Celeron SL6N6 to a Pentium M but had problems because the pins in the cut off corner were arranged differently...
Is this Socket 478 and Socket 479 or FCPGA and PCBGA?
I'm confused...
What I basically want to know is if I did want to swap the CPU how could I know the CPU has that same pin arrangement? They're both 478 pins aren't they? |

All Pentium M processors should fit the same socket as Celeron M SL6N6. What is the S-spec number of your Pentium M processor? S-spec number is a five letter string starting from SL.

The CPUs have 478 pins (478-pin FCPGA package), but they are only compatible with socket 479. This socket is different from all other sockets with 478 pin-holes:
- socket 478 (desktop and mobile Celeron and Pentium 4)
- socket M (Core Solo and duo, some Core 2 Duo mobile CPUs, some Celeron M processors)
- socket P (some Core 2 Duo mobile processors, some Celeron M processors).
So, your motherboard can only be upgraded to socket 479 Celeron M processors or Pentium M processors.

Many thanks Gennadiy, much appreciated.
Do you know how or where I could find a list of Socket 479 CPUs? I wasn't sure if the search function on this site could do that? |

Aha, I've found a list, owing to my FSB being 400MHz, I guess the highest CPU I could go up to would be a Pentium M 765?
Either SL7UZ or SL7V3 both at 2.1GHz.
Is that right? I think then going from the SL6N6 I'd need to do something about extra cooling wouldn't I...? |

SL7UZ is in micro-FCBGA package, it won't fit your socket. Processors in this package should be soldered to the motherboard. SL7V3 may work.
