Helo, well, I've heard of this being done somewhere in here years ago, but I can't remember where the post is.
Anyways, here my question and or solution ?
I have a Asrock K8M800 S754 Mobo. (new)
...on it , I have this "problematic processor" AMD Athlon64 3200+(AMD64 stock cooler with copper bottom).
rest of the specs... 1 gig DDR400, 80gb HDD , Radeon 9600, XP Pro etc, etc...
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ok, so the thing is with this AMD chip, it creeps in heat ! I had it on a Chaintech before, and bought thid new board thinking the chaintech was going bad, because everytime I play highend games like BF2, Cabal etc...the hardware monitor from bought speedfan and HWmonitor shows the chip "creeping up" once you start playing !
Exact senario :
Turn power on check bios utilities : CPU TEMP roughly @45C'. On desktop, checking up the readings of speedfan and HDmonitor 38-40C'
Now I power-up the game (logging in) CPU temps creeps to 47-49C'
The game starts , I run around and do some skills ... CPU temps creeps within 10 mins 58-63C' and slowly starts to make graphics in game disapear !!!... So I shut the game off ! Temp JUMPS down back to 42-44C' within seconds !!!
I've changed the memory, the video, PSU etc, I know its the CHIP 100% sure of it !
Now, I don't really want ot get rid of it, because it works excellent otherwise, I wrote this post with it ! Temp reading @ 39C' only !
--------->: is there a way to take the "cap" off the processor's head ? I know theres a Dye inside, looks like a normal Athlon XP chip. Could the heat be trapped under this cap causing this problem ? If the cap can come off (as I have no other choices to try something), do you think it would drop the temp down a few degrees..like 10C' or so ? It's all I need, is drop the temp 10C' and its good to go.
PLEASE REPLY ASAP !!!!!!!!!!! I realy need to know Emidiately what I should try or do.
Thanx. _________________ ___D_A_R_K_R_E_A_L_M_S___ |

That actually sounds like a problem with youre graphics card to me at first. Try running a stress program like Prime95 or SuperPI, that will stress just the cpu and not the graphics at the same time, if it doesnt crash and start pixelating than run somthing like 3Dmark and see if it does it under 3D. The temps dont seem so high as too crash it to me. And It will always cool right down when relieving it of the load. _________________ "The only reason for time is so that everything doesn't happen at once." A.E. |

Hehe, yea I thought it was the Vid card too at first !
But, I change my video card today with a Radeon 9600. it was a 9200 before.
so...no go for the video problem....it's the chip ! Absolutly everything else has been changed once this week part by part to see if it would correct it, only the CPU remains original !
So now..about removing the cap.. is this possible ?

Yes its possible to remove it, i have read in a couple of places that you can do it, at youre own risk of destroying it tho. Its got strong apoxie adhiesive bonding the IHS to the chip. Maybe you could try a better heatsink, and lapping the cpu and the heatsink to a nice flat surface for a better match.
heres an example http://www.sam0r.co.uk/article.asp?id=29 _________________ "The only reason for time is so that everything doesn't happen at once." A.E. |

Make sure speed control on the processor fan is OFF and that the heatsink's fan is working well |

A more efficient/higher capacity HSF may be in order. _________________ "Have you scanned the RAM timings for Operator's Headspace?? Too much real estate between the audio collectors will block the connection which allows proper operation of your computer."_Cobra

Is the heatsink correctly installed?
Probably reapplying some thermal goo would give it a chance for not going buying a new pc. |

Do you have plenty of airflow into and out of the case?? I run a Socket 754 Athlon 64 3200+ in one of my computers. It's overclocked 25% (2.2GHz to 2.74GHz) and idles @ 34C and climbs to 48C during extended runs of Prime 95. I use the stock HSF and Arctic Silver 5 heatsink compound. _________________ "Have you scanned the RAM timings for Operator's Headspace??
