From the bidding so far it looks like you might get a record price for this one...

Well don't let the prices of the past fool you. The only reason you see my Intel C4004 go higher than others of the past is quite simple: chip quality.

I'm sure you've seen countless C4004's or C4040's, with the writing 90% gone, or the pins desoldered, etc. The pins on this one are very strong and clean, and it's in very good overall shape.

It really disappoints me when rare chips sell on ebay (such as broken pins, low grade condition) and then people start using those prices to govern their value.

So true.

This is why i automatically save the auction image when i add a chip to the ebay auction toplist. So that prices AND chips can be compared even after the auction itself has expired. (I will make a note on the toplist page that photos are available upon request, unfortunately i do not have permission to use them publicly on the site)

Hence why the last gray trace 4004 sold for >US$1500. It was in mint condition. As you say, there are many 4004s out there in poor condition with writing missing, desoldered etc with asking prices of $500+, but they aren't selling. Personally I would pay 5-10x more for mint condition, as would a lot of other collectors...

I'm satisfied with the price regardless, as it is still more than double the price of most sold within the last year(not counting the ones I sold Wink )

Did anyone win it from here? If so, congratulations! Smile
