I bought a Tyan S2850 single socket 940 board. I use it with an Opteron 140. Tyan website says that you can use all Opteron up to 150.
Is there a difference in the pinout between the single (1XX), dual(2XX) and quad(8XX)-CPU versions?
Or should it work as a drop-in replacement?

Yes, it will work, at least up to 250/850. The 200 and 800 series have extra coherent Hypertransport links, in order to communicate with other processors. Your single socket board should just ignore them, and treat the processor as a 100 series.
However, it is also possible that the BIOS will not recognize the 200/800 series, so you might need to specify frequency, multiplier, and voltage manually in the BIOS. |

| I currently run an Opteron 850 on a single socket Asus SK8N motherboard. No worries. |
