I could use a few large mats of it, like say 24x36 sheets or something. What thickness do you need, i need 1/4 or 3/8ths.

Sign me up for several large sheets, if we can get some at a low bulk price.
I prefer thicker (3/8ths), since I want to mount chips on hanging frame displays.

Too expensive for me Smile. 15 sheets would be $375.00.

Here's a place that is mentioned in George Phillips' book:

http://www.jameco.com/Jameco/catalogs/c283/P160.pdf

24"x12"x.25" sheets= $8.77
I bet they would discount more if the group ordered 100+ sheets.

I also noticed nice display cases mentioned in his book. Very Happy

This is what I use in a pinch:

Cheap and plentiful. There's also black conductive paint you can slather over plain polyiso foam board.

I have one of those "pin straighteners", and it is not that good. It is OK if the exact spacing of the pins on the chip you want to straighten is just right and they are not too badly bent, but often I find I have to straighten as much as possible with tweezers (pliers) before using this device to align the pins. I imagine something more solid might do the job better as well Smile
