Hi,

I went to the gigabite site but could not get help as my motherboard/cpu was not listed there.

Can someone help me please? I need to upgrade my old PIII 450 MHz.

Details as obtained from Everest & CPUZ :

CPU Type : Intel Pentium III, 450 MHz (4.5 x 100)
Code Name : Katmai
Package : Slot1 SECC2
CPU Stepping : kB0
Instruction Set : x86, MMX, SSE
L1 Code Cache : 16 KB
L1 Data Cache : 16 KB
L2 Cache : 512 KB (Built-In, Half-Speed)

Motherboard Name : Gigabyte GA-6BA (2 ISA, 4 PCI, 1 AGP, 4 DIMM)
Motherboard ID : 03/23/1999-i440BX-W977-2A69KG0AC-00
Motherboard Chipset : Intel 82440BX
i440BX/ZX Rev: C1

BIOS Type : Award Modular
BIOS Version : Intel 440BX/ZX AGPSet BIOS for 6BA V.2.6
Award BIOS Type : Award Modular BIOS v4.51PG
System BIOS Date : 03/23/99

Sorry, if I have provided redundant information.

Thank you.

PS

On doing some googling, it appears that the Coppermine 550E, 600E, 650, 700, 750, 800, 850 MHz series have a FSB 100.

Can I use one of these ?

Also there are the Katmai 500, 550, 600 MHz.

Thanks again.

As far as i know the coppermine was never supported on the intel 440 chipset. in my opinion, there's no point upgrading if you can't go any higher than 600 from a 450. best bet is to try and find a cheap barebone deal soewhere that has cpu/mobo/ram/case, just be careful because a lot of these do not come with HSF cooler for the cpu. check out tigerdirect they tend to have some good deals. I've got an old dual 550E coppermine machine on serverworks chipset on supermicro board. Best bet is to build a new machine or do a barebones upgrade kit. sorry bud, but options are limited with the older machines, i fight it everyday.

Thank you, whitefox.

The PIII is working fine except that I need to speed it up a bit.

So the best I can get is a katmai 600.

I'll settle for that. Even the 33% increase in speed will help.

There is no gaming on this pc. Just internet, and programming using Java and Visual Basic, for my kids.

No coppermine on 440BX? You jest!!

Your board should support up to 8x multiplier, with a 100MHz FSB.

The only thing which would not allow you to use a Coppermine Slot1 processor with a 100MHz FSB would be BIOS dropping the processor, after seeing it's ID.

The 440BX, I know for a fact, does support Coppermines.

Thank you, Wizzard1.

So if my bios can handle it, I can use the Coppermine 800 MHz.

I guess it will be trial and error here on.

Indeed.. and unofficially tualatin too. 440BX was a great chipset and I have good memories of it. Still have a couple of gem 440BX motherboards like Abit BX133, took some of those to limits back in the days, got the good ol' 440BX running over 200MHz bus speed.. Cool

Thank you, viili for the info and the link.

I'm a novice in BIOS flashing, but will try it if imperative. Very Happy
