I've got a question I wanted to run by another sys admin.

If you have an enviroment that is using DNS and WINS and there is a messed up WINS record could this actually affect name resolution at all? I wouldnt think so since DNS is doing everything but wanted to check. This is in a 2003/XP only enviroment.

WINS is still in use, it depends on the application (f.e. Exchange Server 2003 and Outlook still needs WINS)

M$ says: "you don't really need WINS but everything is running more "smooth" in big network environments with WINS"

The enviroment is using both DNS and WINS. What is happening is the PC resolves the server name fine but our application isnt resolving it. Both client and server are VMware virtual machines.

The order of name resolution when both WINS and DNS are used is

1) Local Name Cache
2) WINS server
3) secondary WINS
4) Name query Broadcast on local subnet
5) LMHOSTS
6) DNS

SO if something is wrong with WINS shouldnt DNS resolve it?

I was thinking that maybe WINS is somehow tripping up our app. since we dont test or support 2000 but I would think DNS would pick up if it couldnt be resolved.
