I bought used T7400 core 2 duo from ebay.

I see there is a mirror like glass/metal square on the top and middle of the CPU chip. Is that the core?

However, the one corner of the core(mirror thingy) is bit dented/chipped.

I havent tested the chip yet. but I'd like to know if its ok.

Yes, the Mirror like thing is the CPU core.
If it's a bit chippid, it depends how bad it is chipped.
However, it could work anyway.
I recommend you test it first Smile

Thanks for the quick response,

Is the metal plate core thingy is actual chip itself (containing the circutry?) or like a smallheatspreader?

It not totally chipped off at the corner but its bit dented 1-2mm from corner and dented part is lost its shininess.

That mirror thing is a substrate. I have no idea how thick the substrate is.

The core you can see on the green pcb itself is the CPU die.
Does your chip look like this one?:

If yes, then the metal cpu thingy you describe is the cpu itself (so where the circuitry is inside)
The mobile c2d processors just have no heatspreader, as this solution cools the cpu better.
So i still suggest you test it, cause it won't harm your laptop anyway (at least i think so, if the cpu is bad, the laptop won't boot)
Good luck testing Smile, and i hope it'll work.

If the substrate is chipped (the shiny portion in the middle) I would very much recommend a refund!!

Chips with cracked dies (another term for that area) cannot properly transmit heat from that section of the die to the heatsink at the top, due to lack of material... To sum it up, the chips overheat in that area and tend to fail quite readily.

thank you very very much to all of you for the help!!

the cpu's dent/chip was like 0.5mm - 1mm deep.. saw it with magnifying glass ... it just didnt feel right to put it on my laptop.. I was just not happy Sad ebay description said its as new condition and picture was different

Anyways I just sent back the CPU to the seller. he will happily replace to the clean one or refund Smile
