Several members have recently received recycled PC's from Freecyle.org groups near them.
Please post here when you receive any computer related equipment through your posting on your local Freecycle.org group.
It will be interesting to see how many items are recycled by members.
I have gotten about 40 PC's and Apples since I started using Freecycle, including 4 laptops in the last month, which ALL work or are easily repairable![/b] One was a 1993 Texas Instruments "Travelmate" laptop w. a 486 Winchip. |

The closest city with Freecycle participants is Milan, where it's more a "dumpster" substitute than a recycle movement.
Nothing so far, but time usually has things to come.
In the US I believe it's better understood. |

I have recieved 5 computers so far, two laptops and three full towers, all were working when i got them except the dell laptop which is no surprise I also have an old IBM thinkpad that works perfect with win 95 on it, but i will take it apart im sure since i have no use for a slow ass lappy. I have also had offers to take a few monitors and a big box of floppies but i declined since i have no use for those either. _________________ "The only reason for time is so that everything doesn't happen at once." I joined about two weeks ago and have only seen a couple of posts regarding computers or related items.
Mostly old clothes, shoes, aquariums, cats, guinea pigs and furniture.
Are you soliciting for computers and the like?
I did see a post yesterday for an old laptop but missed it. _________________ The two most common elements on Earth are oxygen and stupidity. |

I did the same thing, i just put a nice wanted ad for all youre old computers and electronics, and the next day i had 2 people send me an email asking if i wanted thier stuff, the one guy had two laptops and three towers for me along with about ten hard drives and a few cpus that were loose and some other junk, for him i took it all including a couple scanners one of which is brand new in the box still. The other guy has four towers he wants to format the hard drives on before letting me take them. And today i just saw a offer for a pile of junk including an old computer which i emaild the gal and she said i can have it, so tonight on my way home from work ill stop by and pick it up as well. I know it sounds too easy to be true but people are generous in reality especially if they dont know where to get rid of somthing old they have. So you actively campaign through ads...
I wasn't sure it wouldn't feel too aggressive, but if cpus are alone and need help, we are here with arms wide open
Thanks for the tips. Let's what happens. |

Yes, you need to solicite with a "Wanted" post so people know you exist. I get some replies several weeks after I post, since they may have to find the old computer hidden somewhere in their houses before they can call or email you to pick items up.
I post the following on my local Freecycle group every 6-8 weeks:
Wanted:
I will pick up the old computer that's been collecting dust in your
basement or garage, whether its working or not.
I'm NOT taking Monitors, just the main computer unit itself (CPU).
I try to use any reusable parts for hobby projects and then I take the
rest to the SWANCC recycle center for safe disposal.
(Wilmette or close-by area only)
Contact me by email.
Thanks,
John
Not everyone may find your "Wanted" posting after the first day. so it's a good idea to check the "Offers" often so you get first dibs on computer stuff.
With regards to people worrying about private data on the PC hard drives, I offer to remove the drive and give it to them to dispose of, so there is no need for them to store their obsolete equipment any more... |

I got a few last year by answering adverts from people who were having a clear-out. Most were glad that I was not planning to just take the good bits and put the rest in a landfill site (even if I was going to have anything that could not be used recycled professionally ) _________________ My graphics card database can be found at http://www.gpuzoo.com.

Look's like I scored three boxes today, nothing special but it's a start.
And, I know how to get rid of them after I take the "good stuff" out....
I'll take them to a relative who lives near Wilmette and have them contact someone in the freecycle.org group who has this ad
"Wanted:I will pick up the old computer that's been collecting dust in your basement or garage, whether its working or not"
