I have a Gigabyte GA5-SMM motherboard I got off the toss- away
gleaned from a Compaq computer. Model 5304 (mine) = Cyrix
CPU inside and set to "400" (250) Mhz, model 5341 = K6-2 CPU
set to (300?) Mhz, etc. Compaq replaced Gigabyte`s Award bios
with an Award c-mos burned with Compaq`s own bios. The MB
usually works quite well (never perfect) if one installs Windows
98SE (or DOS, etc.) but not Windows 2000 Pro or XP, and uses
a (pci tried) video card, and a (isa tried) sound card, do all three.
Otherwise it`s very repeatable to corrupt, crash or "blue screen".
I`m looking for an original Gigabyte Award bios for it, trade or not,
so that the MB will likely have the typical Award "Geeky flexibilities
". Engineering note: Practically this whole motherboard overheats
badly unless it is heavily fanned or the frequency bus is dropped
to say, the minimum, 66 MHz. I dropped in some easy modifications
in mine and it is now going high speed easily and medium- cool.
It`s rare to find a small motherboard these days that works on
Windows 98` and old hardware, very high speed. |
