i want to upgrade an old system without spending a fortune (that i would very much like to use for a new pc).so i came up with a cheap cpu that the seller on ebay claims to be an engineering sample.
the processor is an AMD Athlon 64 3700+ 2.4GHz Socket 754 .
do you think its worth taking the risk to install it?
any ideas?
thanks in advance. |

Hello,
It depends on chipset on your motherboard. If you have VIA K8T800 then it is a great risk that it won't work. On the other hand if it is some Nvidia chipset, it probably will work (but I can't make guarantees). So there is a risk. _________________ http://picasaweb.google.com/vezhlys/CPUsCollection |

The only socket 754 3700+ ES I saw recently was not cheap, at about $70 (I can't find the listing right now, but it was as expensive as many entry level new chips).
I in fact just bought a much rarer socket 754 3600+ (I have never seen one anywhere!) that I plan to install in the system I am writing this from, and which supposedly runs as fast as a 3700+
I'd be interested to see a link to this 3700+ ES if the seller has more than the one you are considering buying, if it really is cheap _________________ My graphics card database can be found at http://www.gpuzoo.com.

thanks for the answers guys, really appreciate the help, but i cant find the listing any more. i assume that the item was sold or the auction just ended.
the price was high at about 100$, but still it is cheaper than buying a new one since you have to change almost all of the pc components. i mean that i have to buy a new M/B, and new ddr ram memory at least for a new processor so.....if i find the listing again i will let you know since i have a via chipset on the M/B which makes it even more riskier....
thanks a lot and i will post the link if the cpu appears again.its on the english ebay by the way. |
