Hong Kong chip sellers on ebay

Just a warning, before you bid on an ebay listing, make sure you look at the location if it's "Hong Kong" or "China" etc. The chips are more than likely to be fake.

So what is the best way of spotting fakes? I can think of a couple things, but maybe someone here with more knowledge can help?

For me, I just stopped bidding on intel chips all together
If it's from asia and also a chip you haven't seen in a long time or not at all for that matter, odds are it's a restamped chip.

Restamped? Restamped on what?

How do these Chinese sellers know ahead of time if the high bidder is going to be a collector who may not test the chip verses a vintage computer enthusiast who will return the "restamped" chip?

Give me a link to a EBAY auction for a Chinese seller selling restamped chips. I check EBAY every day and I'm not seeing these auctions for these restamped or otherwise fake chips.

I usually read chinese collector's forum every day.
Most collectors in China do'nt have 4004 or 8008 (even p4004 or 8080).
If there can fake chips easily, they should have lots of them.
So, in my opinion, do'nt worry to much.
Couple years ago, there are many "remark" pentium cpus in Taiwan.
Because some pentium cpus can be overlocked.
They remark them to higher speed for sale in a higher price.
But I do'nt think they will restamp something like from intel 486 restamp to Ti486 for sale a higher price...something like that.
Anyway, people who would pay a lot of money in old chips are still the minority.

i'm from China.
i think no collectors in China will fake the CPU purposely in collection market.

some pentium is remarked for a good price, especially 75 to 90.

some TCP package mobile CPU was refit to a desktop CPU in Taiwan. so you can see much more strange pentium and MMX CPUs. but they are real CPUs, although they are not built by intel officially. this kind of CPU runs lower than the mark always and print a wrong sSpec purposely.

restamped chips from china, Photoshop-fakes in another thread here, auctions on ebay that don't show wysiwyg chips ?!?!?!?!?!?

With enough criminal energy everything is possible everywhere.
You don't need to be a chinese to restamp chips.

It is a matter of trust everytime and as long as just a few collectors have a chance to test a C4004 or a C8080 they will never KNOW what they got.

So we should be careful with warnings, maybe we are wrong and blame somebody innocent.
I would not be happy to read in a forum about a "german chip warning".
