|
|
Hi,
I have just got a new AMD socket 754 3200+ Venice Processor. I have put it into my ASUS k8v-mx MoBo and it boots up but windows cannot load. Also Knoppix Linux has problems to.
The only thing I can think of is that my bios does not support the CPU. The current bios version is 1006.
Over at cpu-upgrade.com the bios required seems to be 0207. I have downloaded 0211 (latest) from the ASUS website but cannot use EZ-flash to upgrade. It gives an error message saying the ROM is not compatible with the existing one.
I would be helpful if anyone could help me with these questions:
1. Should I try and upgrade the BIOS using the floppy instead.
2. Has anyone had problems upgrading this MoBo before
3. Is it possible my new cpu is not in the Mobo correctly.
Any help reallyappreciated.
Thanks in advance. |

Hmmm I really cant imagine that the processor is incompatable... Can you test the processor on another board?
How does Windows not load, but the processor POSTs?
You might be overheating, which would kill the system after a short amount of time.
Reseat the processor, reapply thermal interface, reapply the heatsink (and check to make sure it works), and download and boot from the Ultimate Boot CD and do a memtest for 5 passes, followed by a processor burn-in, unless of course you spot your thermal flaw |

If you can't upgrade tho bios maybe check if any "flash protect" jumper or such is capped and not allowing bios flashing.
This sentence pretty sucks but you got it I guess.
What Wizzard wrote is a very good suggestion to follow. You don't want your Venice to burn because of a bad heatsink. |

Hi,
Thanks for the response. To cut a long story short it turns out that my motherboard (ASUS K8V-MX) is not the K*V-MX even though that is printed on the PCB and is what cpuz says it is. It is infact ASUS K8V-MX/s which is some OEM MoBo used by pc manufactures that is not supported by asus in any way. I have put my old processor back in and everything works again. Its a shame, I think I will try for a swap and go for an AMD x2 dual core for only a bit more money and get a new MoBo aswell. |
