I was wondering if anyone has good software to read the 2d barcodes off of intel and amd cpus or any other information about the barcodes.
I believe they are Data matrix barcodes but I'd like someone to confirm.
Also What information is stored on these barcodes?
Thanks for reading and for your replies. |

Hi,
I tried to read the datamatrix on intel CPU.
Unfortunatly, I could not find any relation between this code and CPU. So I came to conclusion it was probably just a serial number without information inside. But maybe you'll be more lucky/smart than me

Wow... I was thinking the same thing yesterday and was thinking of posting the same question. http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/cpu/display/20031020183230.html

Has any one else tried this? _________________ The two most common elements on Earth are oxygen and stupidity. |

Hmm...I've never seen bar-codes on any Athlon XP chips.
It makes the chip look bad. |

Just an example but it's on all newer amd chips and most intel chips for awhile now. I had a program that could read data matrix and other bar codes from tif images but I didn't get it to read these only other computer parts, i'll work more with it this week and let everyone know. |

That's what I feared. It is probably similar to bank notes number : a kind of secret formula generate a code given the model of the CPU, so that the manufacturer can check if it's genuine or not very easily. But any attempt to reverse this code and identify the CPU from the datamatrix is bound to fail

I was able to read this AMD data matrix code with my G1 and a 2d barcode reader called BeeTagg
It contained the S/N Z276106A70231 |

I wasn't able to read this data matrix even when I manually re-created the matrix image.

I also was able to read this one (it was in your Picasa album):
http://picasaweb.google.com/campmjc/UntitledAlbum#5270114404259778338
X465262L70211
I could read that one too.
I used libdmtx (http://www.libdmtx.org/), but in many cases it required manual tweaking of the images.
