I have done and continue to to the gold recovery thing (thus my username). Best chips for a beginner are 486's and white ceramic WITHOUT solder if the pins are copper underneath the gold (not always the case). This is because beginners are usually using an aqua regia process using muriatic acid and a nitrate based fertilizer (both commonly available) to create the aqua regia. This bypasses the need for nitric acid, which is harder to obtain and expensive because it is commonly used in explosives manufacturing by people with bad intentions. Aqua regia was traditionally made as a mixture of hydrochloric (muriatic) acid and nitric acid. Problem is that you need nitric acid as a pre-treatment of the scrap to deal with solder and junk metals. Jjunk metals interfere with the chemistry and interferes with the extraction of the available gold. Beginner' method of Aqua regia works well for 486's because, after removing the gold plate and heat spreader (gold plated junk metal), the remaining metals are just copper and gold, very little tin. So you do not need the nitric acid pre-treatment. Pentium chips have a higher junk metal to gold ratio internally, not just the metal plates, and just plain less gold because of optimized manufacturing. Modern pins and connectors are a nightmare because they are usually gold plated tin junk metal. Sometimes really old pin connectors are gold plated copper and can be quite high yielding. There is a lot you need to know - more than that CD on ebay tells you and more than I can tell you here. Disposal of spent acids is a significant environmental issue that I take seriously, as well as FUMES THAT CAN KILL YOU when the aqua regia is disolving the metals. NEVER do this indoors. When spring time comes I will be documenting this process in detail and putting on my website (along with my chip collection) that is now in development. I will also be making my own nitric acid (not sure if I will post this part of the process on the web - don't want to help the "bad guys") and demonstrating how to get the gold from the junk metal containing scrap using nitric.

One more note - You will NOT make money unless you get the scrap chips cheap. Paying $2 per 486 on Ebay will not make you money.

most of the guys in our local area buy 486 chips off me around 25-50 cents/ea.
i doubt they are making very much money off them, but they will take large qty. of them, so it works out

what are your thoughts on stripping with a plating machine? also i was looking into the subzero method on www.shorinternational.com -- was NOT planning on buying one of those 5 dollar get rich quick schemes, rather i have been talking to gldman on ebay for about a week, he offers free instruction on the hope that you will buy your chems from him. please drop me an email at sloppy2holes@aol.com with any info you can provide.

thanks muchly,
Stangy
