I think there is a thread somewhere here on this forum with many comments and suggestions on what to use to clean chips.

Sorry to bump and old thread, but I've been using conc. HCl (hydrochloric acid); quite potent because when you open the bottle, fumes come out.

I've done about 10 chips so far that had nasty marks on them (caused from solder on the pins on the solder-side of PCBs rubbing against them) and so far they have come out looking 1000% better, almost like new.

I apply the acid to the most heavily scratched areas with a cotton bud (I hope that you on the other side of the pond now know this means 'Q-tip'), leave for 1/2 hour, wipe around the whole chip with the bud again, leave for 15 minutes, wash off under warm running water and ta-da!

I'll have to post some pictures of before and after...

Sometime a rubber do a good job. Sometime soap and toothbrush works fine. Sometime scratches remains.

Using HCl is a lot better because it actually 'dissolves' the scratches (which are actually made from solder in this case)

Interesting. Some before and after pictures would be nice.
My wife will be gone for a few days over the holidays and it would be a good time to try it Smile

I'll prepare some before and after photos and method this evening. I am using 38% conc. HCl (fumes appear when you open the bottle). I don't know what strength you can get where you are in the world, but lower concentration will probably just take longer. Be careful not to breathe the vapour, get any in your eyes; and wear goggles (of course I am obliged to make this safety announcement. Just the same as we all wear goggles and use a fume extractor when soldering; right?).

If I can figure out a way, I might do a time-lapse video of the stuff 'in action'
