Almost a year ago i start collecting new manufacturers because of the lack of regular new additions to my IBM collection. I had hoped this was temporary but I havent addded a new 6x86 or 5x86 to my collection since GOB's sale and before that it was quite a while. While I do have quite a few IBM chips there are a few that I once considered common that I dont have . I dont even see very many on Ebay anymore other than the same 5 or 6 that have been there for months/years in some cases. Same goes for sales here it is rare to see IBM 5x86 or 6x86 for sale anymore. One or two here and there (susl had couple and jrmunro has one.)

Any speculations?

a lot of the 6x86s were scrapped when gold went so high.

That's what I was thinking. I bought two lots during this time but the ratio of common to rare was too low. Did find a 120GE though Smile
I was thinking about new collectors interested in IBM, would be kind of rough starting out now. Same could sort of be said for gold top Pentiums although at least those are available just pricey in my opinion.

Maybe we should set up a "chip-bank", so that new collectors can obtain these before they become too scarce.

A lot of gold top chips are now uncommon, unfortunalety for those who have lacks in their collections... Sad

Another things I have noticed that isnt related to gold value is the amount of IBM 486 Blue Lightening and 5x86c for sale. These have also seemed to drop off and many collectors dont seem to have extra uncommon ones to trade as I have had a rare IBM 5x86-3V3100GA to trade for other rare IBM 486 or 5x86c for many months and havent found anyone to trade with.

I think we are starting to see IBM 286,486,5x86c and 6x86 become uncommon to rare.

neither be pessimic nor optimistic. I think there still be large quantity of them which would emerge in the future.
