I'm afraid "mech sample with no die" is just a K6 with spreadheater and die removed with a heat gun...

Here is a K6-2 with heatspreader removed.
Note the chevron shaped adhesive (boomerang shaped in Australia) at the 4 corners, and more adhesive around the die.
Is there evidence of residue on the packaging of John's mech sample specimen? It is dirty, but maybe there is some around the die.
Is it possible to remove everything from the surface, including capacitors, and leave the packaging clean? Can this happen by using a heat gun? |

Sure :
Step 1 : Take a common K6-2 :
Step 2 : Remove the cap (the die went off at the same time) :
Step 3 : Remove the capacitor and glue :
Step 4 : Clean it up and set the new price :

I don't believe my sample has been altered. I believe it is another unfinished chip.
--notice that there are no numbers on the top border of my sample, only on the bottom border.
--there are no markings of the adhesive residue or stain on the surface or around the die. Is it easy to remove all traces of this tough epoxy?
It's very hard to remove without scratching the surface underneath. I know this from experiance--ughh!
It came as part of the same collection that included many other ES, mechanical samples and unfinished chips.
I hope this helps relieve any concerns.

Yes, it's easy. Couple of hydrochloric acid drops will clean a gold from a solder.
Certainly I know johnorun didn't do it.
Look at package type number! Is it 25098 ? Never sow K6 with the same package type! I believe it's not just common K6 after heat gun and hydrochloric acid.
Hope someone like super-mega-rare-NASA-chip-4you will newer read it . _________________ My Want List: http://www.cpu-world.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=22729

I don't think either.
Of course I DON'T mean John tries to deceive anybody. I just said that it could potentially be a fake, that's it

HCl won't, but nitric+sulfuric acid or iron III chloride would.
