Just to note I have 15 days to return this and its already been 6 days so a speedy response would be appreciated!
OK so I just recently upgraded from an Intel Core 2 Duo E2200 which is on a 65nm Architecture, to a Intel Core 2 duo E8400 which is on a 45nm Architecture.
I don't know all the extreme details of the differences between the two, but I do know that 45nm requires a lower voltage, thus producing less heat.
So before upgrading my E2200(65nm) idled at 75f(23c) and maxes at maybe 105f(40c) under load, and my new E8400(45nm) idles at 99f(37c) and maxes at 128f(53c) under load.
What could be causing this? I'm using the same Zalman CPU cooler as before (CNPS9500A LED) if you need to look it up.
I already attempted to clean and reapply better thermal grease (Arctic Silver) but still same temps.
As a side note, I did not touch any of the clock or voltage settings in my bios, although I did change the memory multiplier so that it would say 1066 since I have 1066mhz RAM
Also this is a 1333mhz FSB CPU compared to my old one 800mhz, and my Mobo does support 1333mhz, could the faster FSB cause the added temp?

GPU: (doubt it matters but here ya go!)

Nvidia GeForce 9800 GTX+ 512mb
If you can please try to send a response to chroniczhen@live.com as I will get that faster since I'm on a time frame with being able to return this CPU if neccessary!

on first look.. the temps for the E2200 look too low.. the temps you are getting for the E8400 are more normal.

Your idle temp for the e8400 looks to be on the high side, but not alarmingly so. As an example, I have a q6700 (2.67GHz) overclocked to 3.52GHz which idles at ~99F and an e2160 (1.8GHz) overclocked to 2.94GHz (1468FSB) which idles at ~82F. The q6700 uses a Masscool HSF and the e2160 uses the HSF that came with the q6700.

Thank you for the responses thus far.
Another question just popped into my head, since 45nm CPUs require a lower voltage than a 65nm CPU do I need to go into my bios and lower that? Or would that automatically change after installing a new CPU ?
Yes I also thought when I first got the Zalman HSF and applied it to my E2200 that the temps were amazingly low, when first installed in the dead of winter I was idling at like 66f, and like 88f during summer, but now it stays around 75f in winter and still 88f in summer.
So I'm kinda worried that eventually the idle temp will get higher for this one since its winter right now and its at 99f
Also, yes I triple checked to make sure the HSF was fully seated. |

When you say your chip (E8400) idles at 37c, is that both cores or just one of them?
As you can see from my sig I have a E3110 OC'd to 3.8 with vcore 1.28 which is virtually the same chip and core#0 idles at 29c and core#1 idles at 37c. Under full load I reach 44c-48c for both cores
It's a known issue that on some of the Intel C2D chips the heat sensors "bottom out" and will not read a lower temp.
However, 53c is not a temp to worry about really. If you start hovering around the 60c mark, thats when you should start sweating.
As was already suggested, try reseating your HSF and be sure not to use too much thermal paste as that can have a counterproductive effect.
BTW what temp monitor are you using? I know everyone has their preferences when it comes to this but here's the one I like.

Sorry forgot to mention that, the idle temps are 37c on both cores.
I'm currently using Core Temp v0.99.4 as my temperature gauge. I just downloaded the HW Monitor and I'm showing the same temps.
I just checked my bios my vcore is at 1.22 max so that's not it, also while I was in there I checked the temp from my bios and it only reports 31c, so I'm getting a little more at ease with the temps maybe I'm just over reacting because of the unusually low temps of my previous CPU which I'm guessing ran low temps because it didn't run at full capacity or something.
Anyways thanks for all the responses guys I'm just gonna let this one be unless I start hitting high load temps. |
