|
|
I just won an AMD FX-74 on eBay for a very good price, and am now searching for what motherboard will run it.
Most socket F motherboards only say they will run Opteron chips. Does anyone know if this will run in a socket F board that is only specified as being for Opteron chips, or are there specific boards that it needs? If it needs a special board, does anyone know any boards it will run in that I might stand a chance of getting at a reasonable price? Naturally a cheap dual-CPU board will be great, but as I only currently have one of these chips a single CPU board would also be great
Please don't just say to search google, as I already tried searching (and will continue to do so), without a great deal of info coming up so far I hasten to add that I am not always the fastest thinker when it comes to creating new search parameters... _________________ My graphics card database can be found at http://www.gpuzoo.com.

I'm hoping someone with experience of using this chip can give me an idea of what boards unofficially support it. As it is the same socket a Socket F Opteron, and this board only mentions FX-7x chips, does that mean the pin-outs are different and they need different circuitry despite having the same pin layout? Of that something else internally differs so the BIOS needs to be written differently?
Unfortunately I think that board will take me a while to find in my price range _________________ My graphics card database can be found at http://www.gpuzoo.com.

the Asus L1N64-SLI WS covers the following cpus, so pinout isnt the prob.
the biggest issue looks like finding a board that can take the wattage of the FX-74s
the powersupply is going to be the most expensive part.. probably need nearly 50 amps on the 12v rails for a dual board.

I think that any MB that support the Opteron quad-core is big enought for the FX-74 |

Cool, thanks for that
PSU won't be a big problem, as I have a 700W PSU waiting to go in a machine _________________ My graphics card database can be found at http://www.gpuzoo.com.

You may have a 700watt psu, but i doubt it has 50 amp on the 12v rail. You need to look at the amperages closly. _________________ "The only reason for time is so that everything doesn't happen at once." A.E. |

Hmm, yes you are right. The 700W PSU only has 30A on the 12V rail It's also not got the 8 pin connector, and the 850W that I have in my C2D system is only 37A on the 12V. Trying to download a user manual at the moment for the ASUS board to see what it says (if anything) about what power is needed for both the 5V and 12V lines in single and dual CPU configurations. No point looking for a board yet if I won't be able to afford the PSU for a while
EDIT: The download server just came back online, and the manual says:
| Quote: | | For a fully configured system we recommend that you use a power supply unit (PSU) that complies with the ATX 12V specification 2.0 (or later version) and provides a minimum power of 600W |
So I guess the only thing against my 700W PSU is the lack of an 8-pin connector. A duplicate of the 850W (which wasn't highly priced) would be more than enough.. _________________ My graphics card database can be found at http://www.gpuzoo.com.

Hi debbie, i have found this Asus L1N64-SLI WS on a dutch selling site for 125 euro's
I think that's a good price for this motherboard.
I could buy it for you and then send it to you.
Are you interessed in this?
New these boards cost 350 euro, so i think this would be a good deal
EDIT: and it's NEW in box |

Thanks Levi.
Yes, that is a very good price. Unfortunately it's going to be a few weeks before I can afford it (for now I have mainly been looking for information due to having bought the CPU). Of course, if your income allows you to buy it and wait about a month for payment, that would be great, but otherwise I will need to remember to ask you nearer the time if the board is still available
If the brakes didn't need replacing on my car I would have it next week, but I think safety is more important than another beast running on my network _________________ My graphics card database can be found at http://www.gpuzoo.com.

Deb,
Make a list of hardware u likely to run & i will run it thru the program i have to calculate amps for each voltage & total wattage when i get back 2 work tomorrow.
I need the number of each of the following.
Hard drives - rpm & type (scsi, sata...)
video cards - model or size
sticks of ram - ddr or ddr2 x ?
cd/DVD rom
PCIe cards x1, x4, x8 or x16
case fans - diameter & type
usb devices
cheers Stu _________________ There are 10 types of people in this world:

I have the MoBo now for this CPU, and ahve it partly set up (too late to finish it tonight). I am using a thermaltake hs/f, designed for socket 754/939/AM2 (it's not easy to find one that specifically says it's for a socket F, or socket L1 depending where you look up the info).
According to the BIOS, the CPU is running at 71C with the side off the case, while I set up the basic system settings. Is that likely to be just because the BIOS needs updating, or could I have a faulty CPU or MB/sensors? _________________ My graphics card database can be found at http://www.gpuzoo.com.

It is known that these processors consume a lot of energy (even in idle mode it uses 192 watts in cool and quiet mode with 2 cpu's according to xbitlabs).

Have you installed the additional heatsink fans too?
And maybe you're right that the board needs a BIOS update.
I would love to see a picture of the rig setup |

The additional heatsinks/fans can only be used when using either a passive heatsink or water cooling. I don't have a powerful enough passive cooler anywhere for a CPU this powerful, and don't have a water-cooling rig (yet!).
The documentation for the extra fans states that using them with an active cooler (ie heatsink/fan) will affect the airflow and may cause overheating.
I'm actually going to "lap" the heatsink, as it looks like it was sanded very roughly with a 150 grain sander. I have 600 grain wet/dry sandpaper (finest I can buy locally) and am going to very lightly sand it until as smooth as it can do, then see if it is better on the heat. It should be
I'll try and get some pics up when the rig is built. Only potential problem I can see is the positioning of the power connector. The 24-pin power cord has to rest over the RAM in order to reach, otherwise it will be restricting airflow to the heatsink/fan (and certainly won't be helpful when I get a second CPU for the system!).
BTW, in case I forgot to say - thank you for helping me get this board at a little under half what it would have cost me elsewhere _________________ My graphics card database can be found at http://www.gpuzoo.com.
