just starting to experiment with photographing of my chips to pre-empt putting them online.
This is my first pilot trial, so excuse the dust and poor lighting
In this style of photographs which colouring do you think works best?
I know the best colouring will change with the colour of the chip, but predominately most are black. I will cross that bridge when i get to it
please dont suggest black as that is cpu-galaxy's web style and i want to develop something different _________________ There are 10 types of people in this world:

Hi Neon
From a purely technical standpoint, white is best for the original photo because you don't have any colours from the background material throwing their cast onto the subject. Plus, with white you can then use a mask / fill to replace it with any colour.
For this reason, I voted white, but....
Having a different colour from white might make people think twice about stealing your picture for use on their own site / eBay etc. because they will have to deal with re-colouring it.
So out of the two other options, I think green looks the nicer. |

In industry, to judge colors, people use a neutral grey background (L=50 in Lab/LCh space) Because it's the background that minimize alteration of color perception. But as most of chips are black or grey, color is not really an issue, so I would say white too (to have a higher contrast with the background)

im just looking at the pics from the home puter... the colours look horrible and patchy on the LCD screen
They looked good on the high quality CRTs i run at work
I use colour and grey scales when photographing for work and also generally use white background for contrast. Just looking at the possibility of using colours
I was going to play with other colours as the background as the green and red mess with the colouring of gold tops _________________ There are 10 types of people in this world:

regarding the photography --
It looks like the chip is sitting on a mirror, yes?
How do you change the background color?
EDIT: those questions are directed to Neon_WA, not JAC
Let me add that I'm quite impressed with JAC's artistic skillz; his creation is nearly up to the level of my favorite personal website

the background is raised above the chip and if reflects onto the mirror, rather than photoshopping. These are as the pics are taken
and for fun clouds _________________ There are 10 types of people in this world:

Yess, I like the greenish-gray color (top one).
Kind of neutral and easy on the eye. |

i am very glad to see that other collectors also like to take the pics of cpus by the same way like i do it the last 2 years. i think the mirror is the best way to show the chip also from the bottom.
i think the grey background is very nice. _________________ INTEL CPU´s, Peripheral,Ram,Eprom... & many Datasheets @ www.cpu-galaxy.at |
