I received pictures of a strange mobile Intel processor:

It's a socket P CPU:

A few notes about this processor:
  • Core Duo/Solo and Core 2 Duo mobile processors have Copyright 2005, this one has Copyright 2006.
  • This processor is marked with FF80576. The first two letters tell the package. This processor has package "FF" which somehow differs from "LF" packages of Core/Core 2 mobile processors, although visually they look the same. 5-digit code after the first two characters identifies the core, for this processors it's a "80576". This core doesn't match core of any production Intel CPU.
  • This processor should have the same size as Core/Core 2 mobile CPUs - 35 mm x 35 mm. Knowing this it's easy to calculate chip's die size. It's 12.4 mm x 8.7 mm, or 107.9 mm2. According to Intel blog (see URL below) die size of Penryn core is 107 mm2:

This very well may be a mobile Penryn processor Smile

Gennadiy,

Are you a journalist or work for a hardware review site?

No and no. I received only pictures of the processor, not the processor itself. If I was a journalist or a reviewer I wouldn't be able to publish the picture as I guess I'd have to sign NDA to get access to the CPU Smile

By the way, thanks to the person who sent me the pictures!
