The industry will supposedly go towards convergence of general compute processors and graphics processors. AMD intends to go there, with its acquisition of ATI, and "Fusion" program. Intel will go there. Nvidia may have a chance to go there, if they can get access to key technologies from Via.

Other rumors from this past week:

Silicon Graphics (SGI) has filed for bankruptcy for the second time, and will be acquired by Rackable Systems.

IBM and Sun have been discussing merger for weeks, and are almost ready to complete a $7,000,000,000 deal.

So our Sun chips and SGI hardware may become more valuable.

Nvidia NEEDS VIA

VIA holds licenses that NVidia doesn't (well they are being challenged in court) so VIA is Nvidia's ticket to success.

I hope so, Neon!

Sad news about SUN and worse news about SGI!

I own computers made by both companies.
SGI is worshiped by the graphics and engineering design fields for making such venerable & high quality machines, not to mention the great chips they place in their machines! Wink
My SGI "INDY" computer has made me a fan club member of their products! Very Happy

Let's hope many of our favorite name chip firms can survive this economic crisis... Sad d'oh!
