Thanks in advance for any pointers...

As someone who still remembers getting excited when the 386 replaced the 286, I am today at a loss to discern comparative power of current processors. This has serious practical implications

I've been shopping for a new laptop to replace my Vaio SZ360P that has an Intel T7200 (Core 2 @2.00GHz). I'm finding it hard to tell if the chip specs of new laptops offer a. better performance than this, b. lower operating temp (this Vaio can cook an egg).

Anyone know a good place to look up relative perofrmance of chips today?

Thanks...Stephen

Out of a performance perspective i find that Toms Hardware has the most complete list.

http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/processors,6.html

Operating temp of the laptop depends mostly on the fan and cooling of the cpu. Not operating temp of the cpu i think.

(Any mod, this should perhaps not be in News?)

To compare thermal design power of different processors you may also use CPU chart on this site:

A quick way to start would be to check TDP (W) and select desired socket type.
