If I recall correctly, the first "CPU" was invented 1971, so NASA must have used a precursor to the CPU. Maybe gerbils on a treadmill?
This year also marks the 40th anniversary of AMD - Intel turned 40 last year.
EDIT:
I found an article that discusses some of the hardware - primitive ICs made by Philco-Ford, core memory, etc.
