Well i am trying to upgrade the cpu in this compaq presario SR5210NX. the motherboard is a Livermore8-GL6 running a intel celeron 420@1.60 ghz with windows vista home premium 1.5g of ram and i beleive a peice of shit 200w power supply.

the CPU im trying to switch it out with is a intel p4 631 3ghz 800MHz FSB with 2mb L2 Cache. i switched them out fans and all and the first time it got to the user log in screen for vista and it seemed like it was going to work but then the pc just shut down. do you think i need a stronger power supply?

moved to appropriate category.

200W is very little for such a power hungry P4. It can be the root cause of your issue. Once there is some power load (because of vista starting), power supply can't follow.

Along with a real PSU, I'd also consider maxing out the RAM, too. I believe that board will support 2GB. If you choose to go this additional route, make sure you add the same spec RAM as is currently installed.
