Look at emerging virtualization technologies. Since this sits between hardware and software, there are many aspects to explore:

Enabled by low cost memory
virtual machine software VMWare, Xen, etc.
OS compatibility
Growth of hardware support (x86 extensions on processors)
Results in higher computing efficiency (performance per unit cost), easier provisioning, better disaster recovery, etc.
