I have a problem with RAM chips

Hi , here it is my problem ,I have two ram chips of 512 Mb and two of 256 Mb and they are all DDR400,when I insert them all on the motherboard a testing program shows that there are four chips of ram but the amount of ram is 768 Mb.I'll be grateful if somebody can help my to fix this problem!

If you put them in one by one, testing them individually, do they all show up?

Hi, my motherboard is Gigabyte GA-7N400 Pro2 and when I insert them one by one the system recognize them,but the speed of the memory decreases from 400 MHz to 266 MHz this is the case when I insert two chips of 512 in one double slot and the other two chips of 256
in the other double slot.

Uhm, maybe the system is decreasing speed for stability reasons, check what your manual says on dual channel configs.

I remember there was some catch on some models.

It's very interesting why when I insert two chips of 512 MB and one of 256 MB everything works and memory clock is 400MHz

In dual channel memory is @333mhz, to reach 400 mhz you have to overclock it. Go to the BIOS and check with your manual for wrong settings that may affect the speed of ram to go below 333.

You must have mixed dual sided and single sided chips (my guess), so not all the ram is seen as should.


Because it's not in dual channel mode. As you put 2 or 4 modules the system recognizes single channel and you get full speed.

But in dual channel 266 mhz is equal to a single channel @400 mhz, or even faster because you get two separate lanes for reading and wrinting, while with single channel it's just the same lane.
