It can be a real pain in the ass.
First you have to find the data. If you are lucky you find some data, often in another language, and you have to work out the necessary specs. If you are unlucky you have to figure it out by trial and error.
Then you have to homebrew the power supply requirements.
Next you have to figure out how to drive the display to produce useful information. ( microcontrollers come in handy here!)
Often you have to source special high voltage components.
.. eventually you get something that works....

Hehe I know what trial and error means....
Had some kind of military low noise tetrode tube or so
without infos and don`t know how I made it but suddenly I had
the red glow emitted by the heating and as bonus some blue glowing
Your big dot matrix VFD rocks, looks like
it can do 2 colors? _________________ Ordem e Progresso |

hehe.. with this display I accidentally touched the high voltage bias to the filament connection.. WHOOSH the filament grlowed RED HOT.. and of course the display was very dim after that.
Yes, the IVLM2-5/7 is a dual colour, interleaved 5x7 matrix. Easy to drive with the right parts. The blue is much nicer than the orange. I dont like the orange.
I am quite pleased with this PCB I made. I am getting the rest of the parts today I hope, so soon the wall of VFD will be glowing!

hehe.. you aint seen nothin yet... I have some filament drive requirements to sort out, and then I can mount the WALL OF VFD. Think giant N x N alphanumeric display. |
