Just noticed this SX903 486 which has a further stamping of SX-33 SK903 below the main print. Have Intel done this or someone else?

There is no documentary evidence I can find explaining the additional marking. The fact the speed is always increased UP, is a red flag to its authenticity.
Anything beyond that is simple guessing.

I have always wondered as to the start of the forgery with semiconductors.. I dont mean the grey market, which technically is something else. I mean the deliberate alteration for financial reward.

I havent looked into this, but I suspect most "fakes"* start around the early 90's. Is this correct?

Intel releasing a flood of chips across speeds probably didnt help this, where going up in a speed step could easily be measured in $100. ( 1990's prices!)

* by fake I mean altered markings or repackaged ( e.g. gold top pentiums) - so the chip will work, but it will boil water doing it. Not the other kind of fake, which I see occasionally on the grey market for commercial chips, where you are lucky if the part works at all. An empty plastic package is not uncommon!

Some of the ones I can remember off the top of my head..
