Hello!

"B9" is the date code for this CPU. CPUs from MME (or FWE, like in your case) were marked with a letter for the year and a number (1 to 9) or letter (O, N or D) for the month.

Example: X4 means April 1989; AD means December 1990.

So your U80601 was produced in September (=9) 1991 (=B)

Xaar.

so why X = 1989 while A = 1990 and B = 1991?

who made the U80601, MME or KME?
or MME and KME are the same manufacturer?

MME and FWE is the same. MME is another name for the same fab. For complete confusion wikipedia says KME. The U80601 in PLCC wear the logo of FWE, but are definately made by MME.

"KME" stands for: VEB Kombinat Mikroelektronik Erfurt, the "head" of the combine. "FWE"/"MME" was a kind of subsidiary.
"FWE" stands for: VEB Funkwerk Erfurt, the former name of MME (until 1983)
"MME" stands for: VEB Mikroelektronik "Karl Marx" Erfurt

thanks for detailed explanation. unfortunately I cannot understand Germany.
Now I have another question:
1) Why siemens has get the official liscence from intel to produce 80286 while FWE cannot.
2) When the U80601 began to produce, after the collapse of Berlin wall or before ?
I think these are interesting questions deserved investagtion.
Wink
