Hi!
Socket 775 is designed by Intel and socket 939 is designed by AMD. If you want an affordable, stable, and yet fast system that can outperform a number of amd 64 cpu's, go with the Intel LGA 775 cpu's.
It also depends on how much you're willing to spend. For about $1000-$1200 you can get a system very similar to mine ( Depending on where you get the product; ebay, pricewatch, etc )
LGA 775 3.4Ghz w/ 800FSB & 1MB of L2 Cache
Abit AA8 Duramax PCI-Express motherboard
1GB PQI DDR2 PC2-4200 With 3-3-3-8 Stepping ( since its double the normal speed, it will perform as a 1.5-1.5-1.5-4)
Nvidia NX6600GT PCI-Express video card ( Whether you choose to get amd or not, make sure it's a PCI-Express type motherboard. The videocard bandwidth is double the speed of 8xAGP and it also supports PCI-Express x1 slots. )
250GB Hitachi SATA Harddrive 7,200RPM
And some shiney $70 450Watt powersupply I bought off new egg
It can handle games like Doom 3 and Half-life 2 as if it were a game of pong. With my video card at high settings ( & 1024x768 resolution), I remember getting 85FPS and up, stable. If you have any more questions whether it has to do with performance or whatever, let me know |

Other way around actually
As I understand it, socket 940 is reserved for servers (opteron), 939 is reserved for high end chips (athlon 64 fx, higher end athlon 64s) and 754 is for low end stuff (low end athlon 64s, sempron)
939 is the newest socket, so i doubt its going anywhere anytime soon.. |
