hey guys, ive been thinking about redoing the back-end of my website, and i was wondering if any of you would have any interest at all in using it on your own sites?
i'd use php and sql (mysql is the one i work with) for it, and smarty for a template engine, so the actual look of the site would be completely up to you.
stuff i was thinking of having in it would be flags for each entry, so you could, for example, flag a chip as a co-processor, or as being of the 386 family, manufactured by intel, etc. there'd also be a search function, so people could be pretty specific and search for only coprocessors, or only 386s, or only intel, etc, rather than relying on keyword searches (which would still be possible, mind you)
comment systems are also my specialty, so each cpu would have its own section of comments, which would be threaded for replies.
whether or not anyones interested will determine how open ended i make this.. if im the only one using it its probably not going to be as extensible..
i wouldn't be charging for this, nor would i really support it, im just wondering if anyone would be interested in it. |

It's interesting.
But I'm just too lazy to take pictures for all of my chips.
And I don't have time to do this.
Otherwise, I'd like to construct a Taiwanese chip collector's website. |

| well you wouldnt have to take pics.. you could just put in the info for them and have a text list, basically.. it'd be up to you. its basically just a database of your collection that would be searchable |

I'm very interested in this. I have 1 GByte disk space (for pictures) + 100 MByte database space (mysql) ready for this. I had in mind creating a database where the pictures were stored in a file system outside the database while all the text information were stored in database tables (third normal form).

ok, what kind of data would you guys want in the database?
this is still in the planning phase for me, so.
im probably going to lose a bunch of you here, i dont know how many of you know databases/php at all..
offhand id think:
flags: -- bitflags obviously -- these would probably be defined in arrays.. something like:
class - 186, 286, 386, 486, etc
manufacturer - amd, intel, cyrix, rise, idt, nexgen
product - athlon, pentium, mp6
interface - socket 370, socket a, socket 7
process - .35, .25, .18, .13, .09 ..
and so on.. if you wanted to add a new one, it'd be as simple as changing a few numbers in a file .. easy to get the hang of.. so for example you could add 'vendorid' and have options like authenticamd.. cyrixinstead.. riseriserise.. etc
so when youre adding a cpu to the db, you'd probably select it from a dropdown.. each option would be a dropdown menu, and youd pick the one thats correct for that cpu, or leave it blank if you dont know or dont want to use it
thered also be a bunch of text fields as well, for things that vary too much to be in a flag.. for example, fsb speeds. so youd be able to type in '800mhz hypertransport' or '66mhz' or '133mhz ddr (266mhz effective)'..
so with the flags and text fields, you could have it output something like
AMD Athlon XP
Socket 370
133MHz DDR (266MHz Effective)
other features id plan on would be threaded comments for each entry.. so someone could specifically leave a comment, for example saying 'the athlon xp is socket a, not socket 370' and you could reply and say 'oops i hit the wrong option, thanks!'
then of course you could click 'edit' on the entry, select the right option, and click save
probably the neatest feature would be searching.. people could search for keywords like 'athlon', and they could also narrow their search from dropdown menus, such as selecting only chips by amd, only athlons, and searching for 1600.. which would pick up the athlon xp 1600+, while avoiding pentium 4 1600mhz cpus..
id also have to have some kind of keyword field for each entry, otherwise a search for 'athlon' wouldnt turn anything up since 'athlon' would be generated by the flag... soo, whenever you select a flag, id just drop the text description for it into the keyword box..
at any rate! what kind of flags/text options would you guys want for any given processor? keep in mind you could leave any of them blank. ill try to organize your suggestions into a workable list of options |

In addition to skold's list:
class - 186, 286, 386, 486, etc
manufacturer - amd, intel, cyrix, rise, idt, nexgen
product - athlon, pentium, mp6
interface - socket 370, socket a, socket 7
process - .35, .25, .18, .13, .09 ..
this is what I can think of:
kind of chip - cpu, fpu, mcu, bsp, ram, rom, prom, support, ...
package - ceramic, white ceramic, plastic, ...
number of transistors
technology - mos, nmos, cmos, pmos, ...
number of pins
architecture - 4-bits, 8-bits, 16-bits, ...
addressing space - 64KByte, 1MByte, ...
data bus width
address bus width
L1 cache
L2 cache
clock speed
FSB speed
temperature range
date code - <year><week>
introduction date
code name

I'm also very interested and will definately participate. But isn't there something like this already?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cpu#Types_of_CPUs
It's basically the same idea- I've never tried to submit anything but I'm sure it's possible since you can edit what others posted. |

Your planned backend system is about the system I use for cpu-collection.de. If you had offered this some 3 years ago I would have saved a lot of time
Some tips from my experience so far:
- introduce flags for the state of your chip, eg. 'online/offline', 'for trade', etc. so you can enter chips to the database without showing them on your site immediately. Good when you get a new chip and don't have all needed data. The flags can also be used for generating views (like a tradelist)
- add meta-information flags, eg. 'FPU for 386' or 'mobile version'. Good for grouping your output accordingly.
- in your editor don't forget to add something like 'save as new version', so you can just open a similar CPU, change some data and save it as a new chip.
- in the backend overview page add some listbox-based standard selects to have an easy way to get a list of chips for editing. (like SELECT <fieldnamebox> FROM table WHERE <fieldnamebox> <'LIKE / != / = '- box> <input field>). Saves a lot of typing.
- add a possibility to mass-replace strings in textfields (good when you have to replace a string in all results of a SELECT)
- make your result output row display configurable (sometimes you need all information in a result view, sometimes only the comment field or so is relevant)
- use some standard selects for generating overview lists in your backend overview (like navigation lists for class, type, etc. so you can just click on an entry and make a select with the clicked entry, eg. list all 386 chips).
- add a field for display sort order. Sometimes the order criteria for your website output (like ordered by clock speed or alphabetically) is not exactly what you want, maybe there are different chips with the same criteria and they would look better in another order. The same is for chip classes, you maybe don't want to sort them alphabetically, like 80286 after 6x86.
OK, so much for now, if you need more just ask. _________________ ..::morkork::..

So does anyone have a working SQL site engine that they can give out for free? I'd love to have one. My site is under construction now, and as I know only a little of HTML, SQL is too much for me.
