My heatgun died and I have alot of GPU and CPU to desolder over the holidays and wanted to get some suggestions on what device to buy.
Would a heatgun with variable settings be the best bet?

I use a Makita with variable heat setting and 2 speed fan and it works well

Propane torch as long as you don't mind the fumes (toasts PCBs hell of a lot easier than a heat gun... ie. they have a habit of setting on fire!)
I have gone through many cheap electric heat guns, and have a Bosch one was second hand from a ex- tool hire auction and it just refuses to fail. |

I also use a propane torch which works well.
Or a turboflame lighter for more precise work.

Same here, I've gone through a non-name and a Grizzly. I think it's time for some decent. I've heard good things about Milwaukee. |

| Watch out for too much heat from blowtorch if you are not careful. You want cpu, not Burger King. |

An old electric frying pan also works well. You'll need a small pair of tongs to lift the chips from the boards.
