A few months ago someone asked for identification of a similar chip set on a french forum. He provided these pictures:
http://membres.lycos.fr/pironsam53/01a.JPG
http://membres.lycos.fr/pironsam53/01d.JPG

One unconfirmed theory was that they had been manufactured by VLSI for the Bull DPS6000 minicomputer, guessing from this:
http://www.google.com/search?q=Bull+DPS6000+VLSI+CPU+VMMU&meta=

By the way, if someone here has a IEEE library account, I'd like to get a copy of this document....

Clues:
- the Bull marking on one of the chips
- the VLSI logo on one of the chips
- the 1989-1990 timeframe
- indications that the DPS6000 used a 3 chips "processor"
- the unusual VMMU name
- maybe the kind of box the processor was extracted from

Here is the thread where this was discussed (in french):
http://www.deuttai.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=688&highlight=

and a page on this machine:

Great, many thanks! Smile
I`ve investigated that the mainframes of the
6000-series were released under various
names by Honeywell, Bull and NEC.
Very interesting is the fact that General Electric was the developer
of the GE-600 series, later when General Electric left the computer business
the mainframe-line was sold to Honeywell and GE-600 was
renamed to Honeywell 6000-series.
The GE-600 / 6000 series mainframes are 36bit-systems!
And I have no doubt that the chip which looks like a 32bit-CPU
can handle 36bit Razz
Here`s my source:

Those chips are the same as on board that you have bought from me ( on hold... you remember? Smile ). I have found those chips in two different systems. If I remember well, one was DPS 6000, the other one was DPS 7000.

Here they are;

I would be interested in the markings of the chips in the 3 chip system & the markings on the board Very Happy

two should be marked as CPU & VMMU, its the other that really interests me.. trying to work out its function.. newtwork processor maybe Very Happy

Hi Neon_WA. Yes, one CPU, one VMMU and one VLSI with marking;

8818V
VM282
VF4540-0001
CIM 78201456
HBULL ITALIA
USA

There are no marking of the board. There are some stickers... but reading is not clear.

Well, I don't know too much about marking of VLSI chips but it seams that first line is date-code and second one is serial number... it looks like you said, earlier version Smile
