I've got an old chip that was taped into a socket. I've taken it out of the socket, and now I'm trying to figure out how to clean the tape off of the chip.
Any suggestions? |

very nice MOS MCS 6502 you have there
Quite a late date (Week 02 1977) for a white ceramic from memory
best way i found to remove tape like that is to soak the whole chip in a container of Denatured alcohol (called Methylated Spirits here)
this might help to show what i mean http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denatured_alcohol
This liquid has no oil in it.. so doesnt stain the chips. Also it does not affect the print on gold or silver finishes.
Just soak in a shallow container with a lid (so the liquid doesnt evavorate) till the tape starts lifting off.
Only thing is be careful not to rub the print to hard once the tape comes off. _________________ There are 10 types of people in this world:

| Thanks for the tip. I assume this will not hurt the chip, and it will still work after soaking? |

no it wont hurt it, even if there is bad seal on the die cap, this liquid evaporates off leaving no residue
it is very similar to acetone, but wont touch the print like acetone could. _________________ There are 10 types of people in this world:

Just be careful that the print doesn't pull off with the tape.
No print = greatly reduced value of a Nice chip.

i use a cotton bud (Q-tip i think they call them in the US) soaked in CLR. Gently wiping the gold surfaces and letting it sit for a few minutes. Then wash the CLR off with water.
If the stain still present, i will repeat the process.
Note.. keep CLR away from any solder, as it can take the shine off it & turn it a dull grey.
Also dont use it on any plated surfaces that have bubbled from corrosion under the plating.
I havent tried it on silver plating.. so i would keep it away from the die cap unless you have something else to try it on first
link to CLR product so you know what stuff i use http://housewares.hardwarestore.com/35-176-rust-removers/clr-calcium-lime-and-rust-remover-225227.aspx _________________ There are 10 types of people in this world:
